The Rod Jones On-line Art Gallery - Demonstration
A 25X18 inch MDF board is prepared by applying two coats of white ghesso using a foam roller to give a fine evenly- toothed surface.
The skeleton outline of the main elements of the picture are roughed in in charcoal and the drawing is wiped gently to remove excess particles which would "muddy" the paint if they were left.

The sky and water tones are laid in and the sun is defined. The reeds and their reflection are added and the right hand shore line is roughed in.

The bank is modelled.

An underglaze of blue is added to the shadow area of the bank.

The sunlight is scumbled in using a dryish brush of white and naples yellow.
The blue underglaze receives a thin glaze of the same mixture.

More white is added to the sunlit area and the shadow of the tree is added. This helps to light the area.
More trees are added to the background

The background trees are softened and another tree is added to the left of the main tree.

TThe new tree is softened, sunlit undergrowth is added and sunlit leaves are added using a mixtere of burnt sienna and cadmium yellow.
A bunch of shore line trees is added and the shoreline is softened.

Another tree is added...

A glaze of cadmium yellow is added...

The glaze is modified with a further glaze of burnt sienna and the tangle of background branches is built up.
A further tree is added

TThe new tree is softened off and a very light scumble of burnt sienna is added beneath the trees to suggest a carpet of fallen leaves.
More undergrowth is added and the shoreline under the new tree is developed further.
The bottom left hand corner of the painting is used to test some glazes to be used to develop the reflections of the trees.

The leftmost end of the shoreline is further developed and the glow of the sun is enhanced by fading the colours of the branches crossing the sun from dark grey to burnt sienna and eventually to white as they pass through centre of the sun.

A significant moment in the development of the picture as the trees on the other side of the Mill Pond are added and the leftmost part of the shoreline is populated with trees.
The reddish tree on the right-hand side of the picture is modified to provide a better contrast for the sunlit yellow foliage

The shape of the distant trees is developed and a tone is added to the background visible through the trees on the left to suggest the bright water showing through the trees.
Reflections are added and some initial glazes of yellow are added to the water area in the foreground.
The test patch in the left foreground is overpainted.

More reflections are added and the reflection of the reeds receives an ultramarine glaze to add contrast to the sunshine on the bank.

An ultramarine glaze is added to the reeds themselves to further heighten the contrast and a lifebuoy is added .
Further glazes are added to the water and some of the darker tones are knocked back.
Ripples and patches of sunlight are added.
