This painting has an unusual quality in that it seems to respond to the weather outside the room where it is hung.
When the sun falls on it, the distant beach seems to light up. When the weather is overcast, it is quite moody.
The fort on St Catherines Island was built in the 1860s to protect Tenby from a possible invasion from France. St Catherine was the patron saint of spinners and weavers and the ruins of a chapel to her was erected long before the fort was built.
The fort never saw service and was eventually acquired by the Windsor-Richards family. Now the island is closed to public access but is an impressive feature of Tenby's South beach.
