The Stade, Hastings
Pastel on 00 grade sandpaper
The Stade (old Saxon term for "landing place") is a shingle beach on the seafront of Hastings where the local fishermenkeep and launch their boats.
This view at the end of a beautiful Autumn day appealed strongly since it has a slightly surreal quality with the two halves of the breakwater like old hulks, the figures on the beach and the ladder casting a shadow on the side of the fishing boat.
I used flour grade sandpaper for this painting and this has helped me to get the wispiness of the clouds to perfection as well as the rusty surface of the boat hull
